My child sees 20/20. Isn't that enough?

Unfortunately, no. 20/20 is a measurement of only one factor in vision, Visual Acuity. It tells us what size images the eye's optics can resolve, but nothing about how the patient's visual system processes information. A thorough Vision Therapy work up and/or Developmental work up can determine the causes behind a child or adults vision problems, problems that are missed if the only vision component checked is Visual Acuity.

My kid seems so smart, but is having trouble at school. What can I do?

Put yourself in a child's place. If you were working all day long to try and overcome a vision problem, to focus your eyes, to control an eye posturing problem, you'd have trouble as well. Vision Therapy can help treat these problems and more.

What is Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy is neurological retraining for the visual system, which includes the eyes and brain. Using a series of procedures, patients develop or recover normal visual skills. Vision therapy is successful in rehabilitating all types of binocular vision impairments including amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (eye turns), accommodative dysfunction (focusing anomalies) or loss of binocular fusion (single vision). Vision therapy is much more successful than surgery or glasses alone.

What's involved in a Vision Therapy program?

Patients typically come to the office twice weekly for 45 minutes each visit. In addition, homework is given to reinforce what is accomplished in the in office sessions.

What about home therapy?

Successful vision therapy is the result of a team effort - patient, parent, therapist, and doctor. All four members of the team need to help carry out and coordinate care. While this is best carried out in an office setting with the proper equipment, staff and processes to foster success, new computerized therapy programs can be substituted for more basic problems, and for patients who live far from Tucson. We will work to make therapy as accessible as possible for those patients who travel long distances to seek our care and expertise.

Will insurance cover Vision Therapy?

Some health insurance policies cover vision therapy. If and when it is covered, vision therapy would be viewed and paid more like physical therapy. Managed care companies have been limiting all types of therapies.

It is recommended that parents not allow insurance companies to make arbitrary decisions that prevent children from receiving necessary care.

Vision therapy is inexpensive and cost-effective when compared to struggling through life with poor visual skills.
